What strikes me about your artist definition: it means that we as listeners or critics or consumers can't actually define art. Only the artist knows if they were doing their best. Sure, we can make judgments and have opinions about what someone else's "best" should look or sound like, but we can't possibly know for sure because we'll never be in the artist's position at the time they were creating their art. If art really is the manifestation of doing our best -- and I like that idea -- then all art is relative and we can only create for ourselves, hoping it resonates with others. This seems hopeful until I wonder if I've ever done my best... or what that even looks like.
