I’ve been listening to a lot of Emmylou Harris and a little bit of Steve Earle and Gillian Welch recently. In doing so I recalled this mixtape from nearly twenty years ago that was really more something for me and Melissa to listen to than a mixtape to give to anyone. I think maybe it’s time for a backporchsummereveningmusic mixtape, upon returning to this. Something I can handle for certain.
The thing about this one: it’s got famous songs by famous artists on it. I for certain subscribe to a philosophy that says a mixtape is not a collection of your favorite songs or of the best songs by the best artists. But here’s one that contradicts that.
Here is the track list for frontporchsummereveningmusic, a mixtape I made for Melissa and me to listen together in the late summer of 2007, when we were staying at an empty academic summer camp-like campus in Northwestern Iowa, in a cabin with a porch (not screened):

Gillian Welch, Elvis Presley Blues — from the album Time (The Revelator) (2001)
Uncle Tupelo, Screen Door — from the album No Depression (1990)
Lucinda Williams, 2 Kool 2 Be 4-gotten — from the album Car Wheels on a Gravel Road (1998)
